Beef Karubi-Don (韓丼 / カルビ丼)

Today i would like to share this easy & inexpensive donburi dish  that you can prepare at home!

What is Karubi? 
It is actually boneless beef short rib or flanken-cut rib. It is one of the most popular cuts of beef for yakiniku. Karubi is very tender and juicy, has more marbling than roast cuts do. For the best flavor, cook for 80 percent of the time on one side until the meat has a nice grilled color, and only 20 percent on the other side. 

Usually I will purchase the already sliced beef karubi from either Isetan Supermarket or Liang Court's Meidiya.
But due to time & distance, I managed to find karubi beef at our neighborhood supermarket!

You can find Karubi at bigger Giant Supermarket at Sembawang Shopping Centre or ColdStorage. Search for Beef Shortribs! It is also easy to remove the bone & have them cut into slices as per your liking.

I found these Angus Grass-fed Beef short ribs at Giant.

Bought them at a good deal of S$11.55 for 420g. This is sufficient enough to feed 4 pax.


So let's get started with cooking now!



Serving for 4

What you will need:

400g of Boneless Beef Short Ribs (Karubi) - Sliced

4 bowls of cooked calrose rice (Japanese shortgrain rice)


(★) MARINADE
2 tbsp Japanese Shoyu (Light Soy Sauce)
1 tbsp Ryorishu (Japanese Cooking Sake/Wine)
1 tbsp Mirin
1 tsp Sugar
1 tsp Oyster sauce 


3 cloves of Garlic (finely chopped)
1 Yellow Onion (grated)
1 tbsp Ginger (grated)
1 tsp Sesame Oil
A crack of freshly groundedd black pepper
A pinch of Sea salt


GARNISH
Chopped Scallions (optional)
Toasted Sesame Seeds (optional)


INSTRUCTIONS

1. Prepare a bowl and put all the marinade ingredients (★) together.
Add in the sliced beef karubi and mix well. Make sure the meat is covered with the marinade sauce.
Cover bowl and leave to chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour or preferably overnight.

2. Heat up your frying pan or skillet to medium high heat.
Add about 1 tsp of cooking oil and make sure it coats the pan/skillet well.
Then put a few pieces of the sliced beef karubi to cook.
Fry both sides until cooked to desired doneness. Remove and set aside when finished.

3. Fill the rice bowls with rice. Arrange the cooked beef onto the rice.
Add in the garnish & serve. Itadakimasu!


You may also like to eat karubi-don with dunsubu jjigae too!
